FRACTAL, 1987

RA: Fractal is the name for the whole edition, or, let me say, the distribution of the edition. These objects showed up as singular events off an on under the Dugout bewtween the years 1966-72. Almost a generation passed until the re-appearance , or one could say metastasis, and that made the name Fractal seem right even though no was could anyboby do a relavant mathermatics on this.

There is an indentation, but it could also be a hole- a short statement of the mouse hole, but still regular size - the black representing a continuing, leaving the depth uncertain. It's not an obstruction, but it's in total shadow - so it could be either. Like the bevel, you have something that works stereoscopically, just as the small light colored panel reads as back. Nevertheless, the connection between the mouse itself and the light panel has some kind of shape, it bevels off and then it cuts off here, becoming some sort of chute through which things might drop - everything is hinging on the black working. Ambiguous is'nt the right word; it could substance or it could be shadow - space is shadow...

BA: It has a reference to soem kind of use or possible use.

RA: That would be a chute for things of this size that are hand-held. It itself is almost hand-help and provide for things that are of the hand-held family...for letters or things to be preserved, either to be stored or retrieved. There's nothing sinister about it at all.
